Driftless Tobacco & Trading Company

History

Fifty years of counter, in a town that predates the counter.

Two histories meet at 519 Main. One belongs to the Driftless region and the river town built in it. The other belongs to a single shop that opened in 1976 and never moved.

  1. Before the town

    The Driftless Area

The last glaciers stopped short of this corner of Wisconsin. What they left behind is a landscape of limestone bluffs, coulees and spring-fed valleys — steep, old, and unflattened. Everything about La Crosse follows from that geography and from the three rivers that meet beneath it.

  2. 19th century

A river town with a counter

La Crosse grew on lumber, brewing and river freight. Tobacco moved with all of it. Cigar makers, leaf dealers and corner tobacconists were ordinary fixtures of Wisconsin river towns in this era — regional context for the trade, not ancestors of this company.

  3. 1976

    Briar Patch Tobacco Shoppe opens

A pipe and tobacco shop opens in downtown La Crosse. The premise is simple and has not changed: know the product, know the customer, and keep the humidor honest.

  4. 1980s–1990s

    The regulars

A pipe counter, a growing premium cigar wall, and a generation of customers who stop in weekly. The shop becomes one of those places people bring their fathers, and later their sons.

  5. 2000s–2010s

    Holding the ground

Chains arrive, online discounters arrive, and Briar Patch stays where it is. Small shops survive this stretch on trust and on knowing what they are selling.

  6. 2026

    Driftless Tobacco & Trading Company

A new name, established in 2026, carrying forward the Briar Patch legacy since 1976. A full house: retail counter, walk-in humidor, members' lounge and a membership that makes the room yours.

A note on the record

Driftless Tobacco & Trading Company was established in 2026. Earlier La Crosse and regional tobacco businesses are cited here as city and regional history only — no corporate succession is claimed or implied. The single continuous line this company carries forward is the Briar Patch legacy, since 1976.
